ATHENS, TN (WRCB) -
UPDATE: One person was shot and another person struck by a vehicle in a domestic disturbance in Athens on Saturday.
Police were called to Brewer Street around 6:30 p.m.
Both victims were found in the driveway of the home. They were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police believe the incident began over a custody issue. The mother of the children responded to the children’s grandparents’ home, where her husband and children were, to pick the children up. Before getting there and when she did get there, she was told that she was not going to be allowed to take the children with her. Due to the couple still being married and no other custody agreement in place, her husband still has equal custody and did not wish for them to go with her. She then proceeded to use her vehicle to ram the gate of the home, striking the grandmother with the vehicle. After doing so she exited her vehicle and began to walk towards her husband and his family, all of which were now outside. Upon doing so, the husband fired one round from a handgun, striking her in the leg.
If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are asked to contact the Athens Police Department Detective Blake Witt at (423) 744-2739.
